|The status of these birds is uncertain. Captive birds only were found in late 2014 on the relatively remote and unexplored island of Manui (Menui) off SE Sulawesi, Indonesia. No wild birds of this form were seen, but local people said these birds occur in the wild.
In general patterning the birds resemble Black-naped Fruit Dove Ptilinopus melanospilus which were also found on the island, but the head of the presumed males was a dark purple with black nape patch showing through at the back and a yellow throat.
The presumed female resembled the female Black-naped Fruit Dove Ptilinopus melanospilus but with a maroon wash to the head and upper mantle.
It is not clear whether these colours are natural or the birds have been dyed, although local people said that no-one did any bird painting. Images are posted here to draw attention to what may be a hitherto undescribed taxon in order to encourage birders to visit this and other little known islands off SE Sulawesi to find out more.
