Dusky Crag Martin
Photographer : © Santanu Manna
Location :Marble Lake, Purulia, West Bengal, India
Date : 5 August 2018
English synonyms:Dusky Martin, Dusky Crag-Martin
Bird Family :Hirundininae - Martins & Swallows
Bird Group :PASSERIFORMES
Red Data Status :Least Concern
Remarks :Found three juveniles with their parents on a rock by the lake. Parents were hawking dragonflies for their chicks, particularly where water was percolating through the rocks. Cliff faces generate standing waves in the airflow which concentrate insects near vertical areas. The Dusky Crag Martin exploits the area close to the cliff when it hunts, relying on its high maneuverability and ability to perform tight turns. This is probably the first evidence of the breeding of Dusky Crag Martin for West Bengal.- SM
