His tireless campaign against the degradation of the Valley of Flowers in the Garhwal Himalayas during the late nineteen seventies finally resulted in the Valley being declared a ‘National Park’ to preserve its unique bio-diversity. In 2003 he received Sir Edmund Hillary’s ‘Himalayan Environment Trust Award for valuable contribution to the cause of Himalayan environment’. In October-November 2010 he went on the Brahmaputra River Expedition as one of the five member 'core team' to do the first ever descent of the world’s highest river from source-to-the-sea through Tibet-India-Bangladesh.
